8 Things to do in Cologne

Cologne (Köln) might not be the Nr.1 travel destination on your list, but it’s worth a trip! Cologne is Germanys fourth largest City and not only will you find lots of different museums, there is also a big variety of nice stores to go shopping and bars.

This is a list of things I would recommend to do while staying in Cologne:

1. Take time
If you’re going to spend a weekend or even longer in Cologne you probably want to take some time. Don’t just rush through the city! Cologne has lots of nice places to enjoy, if you have eyes for the details!

2. Join them
I’m talking about those people sitting on the steps in front of Cologne Cathedral!
Enjoy a late summer afternoon in the shade, have a nice conversation with friends and watch all those different people that walk across the market place!

3. Climb the Cologne Cathedral
To all the girls or men with long hair: you might want to bring a hair tie with you!
Cologne Cathedral is one of the most impressive buildings I’ve seen - and it’s not just from the outside beautiful. You’re allowed to walk into the church for free and for an admission charge you can to climb one of the Cathedrals towers. From the observation deck - which is reached after taking “a few” (about 500) steps - you’ll have a nice all-round view over Cologne.

4. Enjoy a stroll along the Rhine
It’s beautiful! What else can I say? Strolling along the Rhine is perfect for a not too hot summer day and especially nice in the evening! The view on Cologne Cathedral and several fancy bridges makes a very neat flair.

5. Spend the evening in the “Friesenstraße”
The Friesenstraße is not too far from Cologne Cathedral (about 15 minutes to walk or just take the subway).
Savor a nice dinner in one of many nice little restaurants at the “Friesenplatz” and enjoy Colognes atmosphere!

6. Gain knowledge or just enjoy one of Colognes uncountable museums
Yes indeed, I said uncountable - that’s not right, but there are definitely a lot!
So no matter what you’re interested in, Cologne most likely has a museum..

I’m just going to list only a few of them:
-the museum of chocolate (I’m not kidding!!)
-the German Sport and Olympics museum
-Museum of Applied Art
-Museum of East Asian Art
-the fragrance museum in the Farina House
-Museum Ludwig
-Wallraf-Richartz-Museum

7. Visit the botanical garden
That one might sound cheesy, but strolling through Colognes famous botanical garden is super nice! You’ll feel far away from the “trouble” of a big City and I think not only flower lovers will adore that place!

8. Love “Padlock-Bridge”
The “Hohenzollernbrücke” (padlock bridge) is a must see! This place radiates the love!
Many Couples have fixed padlocks to the Hohenzollern Bridge as proof of their everlasting love & thrown the key into the Rhine river.
